Intuition is a topic that's come up several times on my podcast, Therapy For Guys. In one episode, Dr. Joel Vos spoke about the connection between intuition and meaning in life. Men who are not in touch with their intuition may struggle to experience meaning. For Vos, intution is a neglected part of us that helps us determine what is important and valuable. In another episode, artist Patrick McGrath-Muñiz unpacks the importance of intuition. He states that intuition relates to creativity and wisdom.
What Is Intuition?
Intuition is a type of knowledge that is not governed by rational deliberation. This is not to suggest that intuition is anti-reason or magical thinking. Intuition is a different order of knowing. It is often referred to as a "gut feeling." Intuition is a flash of insight that one is not always in control of. It's connected to emotion, memory and the subconscious mind.
While some people may be more intuitive than others, it is something that all men can cultivate. Men are often encouraged not to look within themselves, making it difficult to be in touch with intuition. While society pressures men not to be emotional, learning to cultivate intuition can benefit them in many ways.
Three Ways to Reconnect With Your Self
Listening
My friend and podcast guest, Aaron Inkrott, has said that we have to begin with listening. You can start by putting down your phone and taking a break from social media. Take 5-10 minutes in the morning to sit in silence. You can meditate, pray, or sit with your thoughts.
There's nothing to control or analyze. This is difficult for a lot of men because we are so used to wanting to rely on reason. To listen to yourself means to take time to experience what you are feeling. If you sit with your self you may discover positive and negative emotions. The goal is to make room for them and to let them speak.
Pay Attention to Dreams
One way to get in touch with your intuition is to pay attention to your dreams. While most of us don't recall our dreams, research suggest that we dream each night. Not everyone agrees on the nature and meaning of dreams.
In my therapy, I focus on dreams because I think dreams are connected to our unconscious mind. Dreams present images that relate to emotions and memories that we may not be consciously aware of.
Dreams can open you up to deeper parts of yourself. Parts of you that you've forgotten or not been in touch with for years. Dreams speak to our instinctual side. And this is connected to intuition. Some people refer to intuition as a "sixth sense." I don't know about that, but I do think it's a way of accessing the world that's important.
I would encourage you to listen to this episode of the podcast where McGrath Muñiz offers some helpful ways to work with your dreams and reconnect with your intuition.
Spend Time in Nature
Tierra Ortiz-Rodriguez was a guest on my podcast. She's a therapist that helps clients connect with nature. Spending time in nature is a great way to cultivate your intuition. It's a means of disconnecting from distraction and plugging into calm, beauty and wildness. Going for a walk or meditating by a tree can help you relax and settle into a part of you that goes deeper than your rational brain. The more you connect with your intuition, the more you'll feel in touch with important parts of your life.
Therapy For Men Can Help
Therapy for Men can help you as a guy open up. One of the ways to help you identify your emotions is by signing up for therapy for men. A male therapist is someone your son can trust and develop a relationship with.
A male therapist can also work with you to develop goals and healthy coping strategies. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective ways to work with men. CBT is a short-term, problem focused approach. CBT is effective at treating a variety of problems.
